A Most American Terrorist

3 AAF MS Gulf Coast Gold Addys • USM Art and Design Student Show 3rd Place in Print

For this project, I was required to select an article on a “controversial” topic and then design a spread and cover for a magazine. The spread and cover had to be accompanied by images manipulated in various ways. These methods included: mark making, photo transfer, collage, and photo degradation.

The article I chose to design for is called “A Most American Terrorist: The Making of Dylann Roof.” It discusses the life of the man who entered a church in Charleston and shot and killed several African American people. The spread’s design was created by taking sections of the killer’s journal, burning the paper, and combining them to create a chaotic collage. I also added some red marker to make drawings or emphasized certain parts. The church is displayed on top of the paper, standing strong amidst all of the racist remarks surrounding it. The goal for the cover was to create shock value. I achieved this by taking a well known symbol of racism and transferring an image of an American flag on top. The eyes of the hood were replaced with the shooter’s eyes in order to include him in the imagery.
